What is a licensed clinical psychologist?Among mental health professionals, the State of California reserves its most rigorous requirements for the licensure of psychologists. The candidate must hold an approved doctoral degree, such as the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), or Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). This degree requires at least five years of full-time academic course work and the completion of a doctoral dissertation. Only candidates who have completed 3,000 hours (almost three years) of clinical training under the direct supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist may sit for the licensing exam. The applicant must pass both a written examination and the California Psychology Supplemental Examination. A licensed clinical psychologist is not authorized to prescribe medications. Only a physician may do that. However, if medication seems appropriate as an adjunct to psychotherapy, and if the patient agrees, the therapist may recommend an evaluation by a physician, usually a psychiatrist, for this purpose.
